Famous Face Friday: Terry Wogan

In 1982 Terry Wogan took part in the Run, driving the British Motor Museum’s 1904 Thornycroft,  accompanied by his wife Helen and their three children. The popular BBC television and radio presenter joked beforehand: “I support it’s time I began to act my age, so long as nobody asks me to actually ‘Run’”.

The Thornycroft was fresh from a major overhaul, but developed overheating problems – which Bill Boddy, reporting afterwards in MotorSport magazine, said that ‘the rain did nothing to cure’. However, the November 1982 newsletter of the Dorset Austin Seven Club – several of whose members had driven their Sevens to Brighton to watch the veteran cars arrive – reports that the Wogan family did make it to Brighton in the end, having taken around six hours to travel the 56 miles.
